Harrison Cady was born
in Gardner, Massachusetts in 1877 and lived a long life until 1970.
As a young man he lived in Brooklyn, New York but he eventually
settled in Rockport, Mass. He was a popular and prolific artist
and illustrator writing and illustrating his own children's books,
contributing to newspapers such as the Herald Tribune, and to magazines
including Life, Ladies' Home Journal, Country Gentleman and others.
His work has been exhibited at the National Academy of Design and
he had one-man shows at the Macbeth, Kleeman and Currier Galleries.
His originals are in the collections of the New York Public Library,
Metropolitan Museum, Library of Congress and in numerous private
collections. However it was Cady's collaboration with Thornton Burgess
for which he is probably most well known. Their joint contributions
to books, magazines and newspapers spanned nearly 50 years. We're
pleased to be offering a large selection of wonderful original pen
and ink drawings by Cady, all of which appeared in the New York
Herald Tribune in 1955 to illustrate Thornton Burgess' Bedtime Stories.
All of Burgess' beloved characters are represented in fine detail.
The images measure 5 x 6" and are signed by Cady as well as captioned
by him in his hand. Characters include Peter Rabbit, Paddy the Beaver,
Blacky the Crow, Jerry Muskrat, Grandfather Frog, Hooty the Owl,
Longlegs the Heron, Snowfoot the Woodmouse, Buster Bear, Reddy Fox,
Queen Bumble, Little Joe Otter and Spotty the Turtle. Each is $850.00.
Several pieces are reproduced below, but please inquire if you would
