McCLOSKEY,ROBERT. MAKE WAY FOR DUCKLINGS. NY:Viking / Junior Literary Guild 1941 (1st published August 1941). 4to, rust colored cloth with picture of a duck in lower right corner, bottom edge rubbed and the inevitable and always present offset on endpapers from binding else VG+ in dust wrapper with price intact, with no award medal and with no mention of the Junior Literary Guild. (Jacket has 1/4" piece off spine ends and corners, fraying with some closed tears on bottom edge, rough at crease). 1st edition, CALDECOTT AWARD WINNER. [A word of explanation about the Junior Literary Guild: The Junior Literary Guild was created in 1929 as a literary book club for children. It prided itself in often selecting the best award winning books before publication. This is most likely due to its editorial board that included amongst others Carl Van Doren and Eleanor Roosevelt who was an active member of the board. Unlike other book clubs that offered cheap reprints, the Guild books used first edition sheets with the only changes being different binding color and the inclusion of the words "Junior Lit. Guild" on the title page and spine. Because they are in fact first editions, Guild books are almost as valuable as the Viking copies but they can sell for a bit less]. Because every child who read this book, read it to death, first editions in dust wrappers are notoriously rare, and ardently sought after. This one is a prize. See Bader p. 155-6.
