(SHINN,FLORENCE SCOVAL)illus. ORIGINAL ART: LOVEY MARY. This is an absolutely wonderful signed pen and ink with watercolor done by Florence Shinn for Peter Parley To Penrod author Alice Hegan Rice's book Lovey Mary published in 1903 by the Century Co. It appears greatly reduced in black and white opposite p. 106 of the book. The original measures 16 x 12" on artists board with the actual image covering most of the surface. Captioned "Stick Out Your Tongue". Depicted are two women one elderly and one teenaged, standing on opposite sides of a picket fence. Both are in dresses and hats typical of the era, and the younger woman is sticking her tongue out at the older woman! Grass and flowers are in the background. Florence Shinn studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and she was the first of four women married the the artist Everett Shinn ("Shinn's mercurial temper resulted in four divorces" See Who Was Who In American Art p. 565). Done with much detail and quite charming.
