ANDERSEN,HANS CHRISTIAN. WONDERFUL STORIES FOR CHILDREN. NY: Wiley and Putnam, (1847). 16mo, green gilt pictorial cloth, wear to spine extrems and sl. cover soil, else VG+. This is an early illustrated edition to be printed in America of Andersen's first work of fairy tales translated into English. (Preceded by a Ticknor edition consisting of English sheets and a Wiley & Putnam edition issued without illustrations) Unfortunately, this copy lacks the third of four plates. Other copies of this edition lack the same plate, leading to the possibility that since the plates were supplied from the English edition, there may have been fewer copies of this plate. Translated by Mary Howitt who decided to translate Andersen's works after having met the author. Author's name mis-spelled on the title page.
