BAL 112 calls for a tipped-in portrait frontis and tipped in title page. The title is tipped-in but there is no portrait and no evidence that there ever was one. Also noted is that some copies have 12p. of ads in the rear. This copy has 16 pages of ads not numbered sequentially leading to the conclusion that this copy was some kind of binder's variant. Written by Louisa May Alcott's father, a noted educator, the text is a collection of essays both practical and intellectual including one on educationn that emphasizes that it is society's duty to educate children. His essay on Friendship has a section on children as well saying that no society is complete without children. BAL 112.
