CARROLL,LEWIS. PHANTASMAGORIA AND OTHER POEMS. London: Macmillan 1869. 8vo (5 x 7"), 202p., blue cloth with gilt decorations, all edges gilt. Except for light fraying to spine ends, this is in near Fine condition in a custom cloth clamshell box. THIS COPY IS INSCRIBED ON THE HALF-TITLE BY DODGSON TO THE ARTIST THOMAS HEAPHY THE YOUNGER. It reads: "T. Heaphy, Esq. With the author's kind regards, Jan. 1869." According to his diary, he sent out 28 copies on January 7, 1869 to his friends and family so presumably this is one of those copies. Thomas Heaphy the Younger was a well regarded artist whose name figures heavily in Dodgson's journal entries for late 1868 and 1869 and who appears sporadically in his letters. During this time Dodgson was negotiating the purchase of Heaphy's painting "Dreaming of Fairyland" in which the depiction of young girls appealed to him. This is a super association copy.
